PicoStation2HP - Fon Flash Method
PicoStation2HP - Fon Flash MethodEdit

Page last modified 08:39, 8 Apr 2011 by ispyisail

Note: Depending on which router is being flashed you may find "fon flash" little finicky, It has been reported that it can take 7-8 tries before it will catch the bootloader at the right time and begin the upload.
Watch the output in "fon flash", I typically see both devices get assigned an IP, and then within 30-45 seconds you'll see the files getting transferred and the process will take 15 or so minutes.
If you see nothing happening after both devices get assigned an IP, say 60-90 seconds. I close fon flash, and do the reboot/reflash procedure all over again.

To fix this problem you may edit the Redboot to extend the "Boot script timeout (1000ms resolution): 1" to 3 seconds. (To be confirmed).

    Windows Prerequisite

    Wincap
    Firmware files
    FonFlash

    Wincap

First, you'll need to install a utility program called Winpcap. Get it here:
    http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm

    Firmware Download

    Download the latest test firmware
    https://svn2.hosted-projects.com/ansanto/robin-mesh/images/test/
(check the forum for most current files)

Images needed for Picostation 2HP are:
    openwrt-atheros-root.jffs2-64k
    openwrt-atheros-vmlinux.lzma

When you see a string of numbers like this "r2573-2.6.26.8", the prefix R signifies the Robin release number, and 2.6.26.8 signifies the linux kernal version. The Robin release number changes more frequently than the Linux kernel.

    Install Instructions

    http://robin-mesh.net/Howto/Install/Fon_Flash

    • Install WinPcap (only necessary for windows)
    • Connect the ethernet cable from the Pico2HP to your computer
    • Power off the Pico2HP
    • Select Firmware
    • Gargoyle/OpenWrt/ROBIN
    • Select your NIC interface (not wireless)
    • Robin's Pico 2 HP Firmware (2 files)
    • Select the Gargoyle/ROBIN .squashfs file as the root file (openwrt-atheros-root.jffs2-64k)
    • Select the Gargoyle/ROBIN .lzma file as the kernel file (openwrt-atheros-vmlinux.lzma)
    • Hit the Start button
    • Wait 2 seconds
    • Power on the Pico 2 HP
    • Wait 10 minutes - 30 minutes, until FonFlash reports that the router has been flashed (this really take a while.. go have a coffee, go for a walk, a shower and stop watching it..... do not interrupt that process, so please be patient)
    • Wait another 5-10 minutes while the router reboots

It will return two green lights
When it is done, the flash utility will close and your router will reboot.

    Dashboard

Now you can add that node on your Open-Mesh Dashboard
IMPORTANT: On your Dashboard Edit menu - Advanced tab
    Use OLSR: checked
Disable Automatic Upgrades: checked (disabled) otherwise it will downgrade it's firmware)
Use Test Firmware: checked (this is test firmware)

Then connect the Pico 2 HP to your xDSL or other internet connection for one hour to let it connect to your Open-Mesh and it will eventually appear on your Dashboard in 5 or 20 minutes (all leads will flash at different time, go for a walk).
Give plenty of time to upgrade and mesh.
Your router will then be ready to use anywhere on your network, as a gateway or repeater.

    Notes

    Ubnt Firmware recovery method

The Pico2HP has a reset button which can be used in the firmware recovery method but is not necessary with the fon flash installation procedure

    Setting your Windows Network connections

You don't need to do anything to your NIC settings as "Fon Flash" will auto config your NIC for you.
